The Original Nasi Uduk Betawi : Mpo Sunayah, Kemang

Nasi uduk (savory rice cooked in coconut and served with several side dishes) may be the most famous local Jakarta dish. It is eaten not only in the morning time but also in night time. Frankly, nasi uduk is one of our favourit dishes too. However, if you note, there are actually two styles  of how nasi uduk is served. First one  is nasi uduk is served just only with lauk such as fried chicken, sate usus, tahu, tempe, ati ampla without much vegetables dishes. This first type of nasi uduk style may be found at Nasi Uduk Kebon Kacang  or Nasi Uduk Gondangdia. The second style of nasi uduk is more ignorant of lauk. It is served with various (vegetables) dishes. We consider that this last style  of nasi uduk is the original one. According to a story from indigenous Betawi people, the word of "nasi uduk" literally means "mixed rice". "Uduk" means "aduk" or mixed. So nasi uduk means mixed rice, rice which is mixed with various of dishes. Of course, you cannot find the scientic basis of this story. But well, we acually love more this last style  of nasi uduk. This is simply because you would feel "kalap" to see a lot of dishes to be chosen to accompany your nasi uduk
One of our favourite nasi uduk stalls is called "Nasi Uduk Betawi Mpo Sunayah" located in Kemang area.
This simple stall is located in front of Panin Bank's yard Kemang just opposite Hollycow. We notice that it has been there for quite sometimes. The dishes are served in a two-storeys of trays. These dishes include tempe orek (tempe stir fried with vegetables and soy sauce), teri kacang (anchovy with peanuts), bihun goreng (rice vermicelli), tumis sayuran (stir fried vegetables), semur jengkol (jengkol bean stew in sweet souces or red chilli), kentang balado (potato in red chilli) and last but not least sambal kacang (peanut sauce). Your nasi uduk set is not complete without sambal kacang
In addition to those dishes, this stall also offers various lauk such as fried chicken, ati ampla, sate usus,  eggs stew and ayam cabe hijau (chicken in green chilli) The taste is great in particular its semur jengkol (jengkol bean stew in sweet sauces) and the price is considered cheap. Kerupuk is served for free. The above food (nasi uduk, egg stew, jengkol, bihun goreng, potato in red chilli and sate ati ampla usus) is priced at IDR 22,000 including unsweetened hot tea and kerupuk. If you are boring with high-end restaurants, bars and cafes in Kemang area, you may pay a visit to this place. Worth to try.
