[Culinary Travel-Medan] Tip Top

The only classic restaurant which is never changed in Medan is probably "Tip Top Restaurant, Bakery & Cakeshop". This restaurant was actually founded in 1929 with the name of  "Jangkie", following the name of its owner. After moved to Kesawan area (Kesawan was a business centre of Medan at that time) in 1934, its name was changed to Tip Top.

After finished our first meeting with the client, we decided to go to Tip Top. It was around 5pm and the wheather was not quite good. Small rain. From our hotel, it took no more than 10 minutes by taxi and costs at IDR 10,000 (Bluebird). It is located at Kesawan area. Even though it called itself as "Restaurant, Bakery & Cakeshop" (at least at its official website), when we arrive we saw a big sign board of "Tip Top Restaurant-Lunchroom". A lot of cars parked along the street in front of the restaurant.
As we remember from our last visit here more than seven years ago almost no change on the appearance of this place. When we arrive, outside part of the restaurant has been half full, while the inside part was empty. Some foreign tourists sit and drunk beers and smoking. It is the best to enjoy Tip Top from veranda rather than inside.

It was too early for diner so we did not order heavy food. Instead, we want just to enjoy the atmoshphere of this old restaurant while to try its snacks. So we decided to order a portion of bitterballen for sharing. Bitterballen is a savory Dutch meat-based snack. One portion consists of ten small bitterbals. This snack is actually one of the best seller foods in this restaurant.
Tip Top's bitterballen is cheesy. It appears that they have put more cheese inside the ball rather than meat. But it was delicious when eaten hot. It did not take long time for us to finish these ten small balls. The restaurant served free water if you did not order any drink.

Rain has stopped for a while and the air was very humid. Tip Top is also famous of its ice cream so that it is called itself as "Tip Top Ice Cream Palace".

We order a piece of ice cream cake with three flavours chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. The taste is not special but worth comparing to its price.
We will definitely come back to Tip Top whenever we visit Medan to enjoy the main courses and other dishes.
